With the recent passage of gay marriage in the District of Columbia, and Allied In Pride’s hosting of Meghan McCain to discuss her silly and juvenile attempts to “redefine republicanism,” it is necessary for Americans and especially us conservatives, to voice our defense of traditional marriage.
As I outlined in Hatchet Op-Ed earlier this year, the American people do not want gay marriage, and as in California, we are witnessing democracy fail the pro-gay marriage agenda. This is because the majority of Americans still hold on to traditional societal values and they recognize that the nuclear family is by far the healthiest environment for children and the familial institution.
Therefore, myself and other members of the GW Chapter of the Young America’s Foundation will peacefully and politely be protesting tomorrow’s event: “Meghan McCain: Redefining Republicanism, No Labels, No Boxes, No Stereotypes.” Our protest is two-fold, as we disagree with the recent DC legislation that allows for same-sex marriage, and as well as with the argument that “Republicanism” be redefined as a party that embraces social progressivism and undermines traditional values.
We are well aware that that this peaceful protest will cause controversy and many will negatively label and slander us. Many will also see our position as “anti-gay.” This could not be further from the truth. We recognize that homosexuals have the right to live in non-traditional arrangements, however these arrangements have historically never been formalized by either church or state. GWYAF respects that Gays and Lesbians have a right to live as they choose, but we don't believe they have the right to redefine marriage for all of us. It is not bigotry to believe that children need both a mother a father. Furthermore, many argue that same sex marriage is comparable to interracial marriage in its societal struggle. However, they share nothing in common. Segregation was an evil social problem that prevented positive relationships from occurring, while Marriage, as an exclusively heterosexual union is a profound social good. Moreover, there is no research showing that interracial parenting is developmentally harmful to children, but literally thousands of studies indicate that children are hindered developmentally when they are denied their mothers or fathers. This tired argument may be offensive to the African American community seeing as over 60% who oppose same sex marriage.
GW YAF invites all members of the community who stand for traditional marriage, and the current Republican Party platform with respect to the issue, to join us in a demonstration against efforts to redefine marriage as well as Meghan McCain’s flawed view of conservatism.
